THE LAND SEAGULLS VS. THE SEA SEAGULLS

You can tell the difference between them in the land seagulls’ cravings for tortillas, and sea seagulls’ preference for fish.

The former are fatter, louder, and dependent on the humans they fly around, seeking scraps and attention.

The latter are slimmer and smaller, despite their great salt intake. They couldn’t give a shit. Hovering over the water, and pushing against the wind as they search for sustenance in the waves below.

Both the land and sea gulls come to rest on the sand at the hunting hour’s close. Huddling together, and tucking heads into their soft downy chests to protect against that harsh Yucatan winter.

Her golden eyes peering into mine.
Daring, inviting, encouraging me to play.
She darts inside and out, between worlds, between people.
Somehow both completely outside of their reign and helpless to it.
Golden fur matching eyes, little fox dog so sweet and so kind.
