A friend the other day commented on the blueness of the skies, and how much more noticeable this is without the particulates from so many damn cars on the roads.

We have been presented this opportunity to slow down. Already the drastic decrease in number of people in the streets, fewer emissions from factories operating full-swing, to the deceleration or halting of so many forms of production has seen the return of dolphins and swans to the Venice canals after many years of absence. Waking up and working in rhythm with the far more noticeable birdsong, I join other walkers of the neighborhood, as pedestrians and the whooshing of bicycles are rightfully restored their rulership over the streets.

Now is our time. A few Fridays ago, I participated as Surfrider’s Climate Committee lead on a video conference call with twenty-nine other participant representatives from organizations focusing on various climate-related issues. Fucking inspiring. All of these people dedicated to this greater cause, acknowledging the changes already set into motion and moving fast towards even bigger shifts.
There was some overlap among the people and many organizations present, with projects happening on a number of different levels. Organizations and efforts ranged from educational and school-based programs, religious communities, lobbying and influencing policy change, green and sustainable housing, cooking and diet, to one group aiming to convert the Santa Monica Airport to a city park by 2028. I think all of us are pretty psyched to get collaborating.

The rise of COVID-19 has resulted in the suffering and inconvenience of of many humans. And the mandated quarantine and orders to shelter in place have at the same time provided a long overdue opportunity for the rest of the life on this planet to rest, recuperate and reset after years of abuse inflected by our hand. This time of physical separation and shutdown is in many ways a gift, that we might all slow down, find new ways of maintaining and creating new connections, and understand life from a different perspective.

An old friend has been offering free online Qi’gong classes that I’ve been participating in twice a week. I am the only one online younger than 50. And there is something for all of us to learn in the meditated movements, pulling the energy up through the Earth to offer it up to the sky. Stretching and reaching out to the universe, then sinking back down, a little more grounded than before.
